L’Atelier de Subtils is a fragrance line
designed to be subtle. Released by VT Cosmetics in collaboration with BTS,
Frédéric Burtin (Institut Très Bien) is the nose behind the scents. Eau de
Vert is endorsed by (lil meow meow) SUGA.
Probably the most straight forward in
character out of the three I purchased (see: Eau d’Océan // Eau
de Coton) and definitely my favourite. This is a creamy santal-patchouli
fragrance, sweetened with tonka bean – not the slightest bit balsamic – but a
smokey vanilla.
I love how calming and relaxing this is, and a
few sprays of this always makes me feel ready for bed as I adore a good patch
(I was the type to overspray Mugler’s Angel in high school, and I
still would given the opportunity).
Longevity is also amazing for an EdT, and Eau
de Vert easily pulls off six hours on fabric.
Compared to Océan, the cedarwood doesn’t have
as strong as a presence here. Instead, it serves to give Vert a lift in the
opening alongside the citrus notes (I get whiffs of primarily bergamot) that’s
popular amongst the mainstream male fragrance market at the moment.
Particularly when you look at Chanel’s latest reformulations and flankers of
the Allure/Bleu/Sauvage nature.
Cedar is a characteristically ‘cooler’ note,
so amongst the warm tones of sandalwood and tonka, it creates that sharper
opening, but this doesn’t last – and you’re left with the aforementioned
patchouli x sandalwood aromatics set on the loveliest tonka bean base. All
smoothed off with vanilla and the softest, barest hint of coconut crème, giving
it a creamy ‘comforting’ vibe.
What you smell around thirty minutes of this
spraying pretty much lasts until it fades.
It’s not often that you find a wood based
aromatic offset by such creamy gourmand notes, neither in the mainstream female
market, or in Asian fragrance releases, so this may be a challenging blend at
first if you’re not used to such fragrances.
One of my friends actually said that Vert
reminded her of Chinese medicine, and it’s because patchouli – also known as
‘Korean mint’ – is oftentimes used as a traditional Chinese remedy. It’s very
common to spot it at temples in the form of incense.
Vert brings to mind hot spring resorts for me.
So I’d have to agree that there’s a definite ‘East Asian’ vibe to this scent.
For scent reference, since Yoongi likes his
LUSH bath bombs, let’s use LUSH scents as a guide-
If you like scents such as Guardian of
the Forest, Supertramp, or the Lord of Misrule line – this is
definitely going to be one you need to try.
