L’Atelier de Subtils is a fragrance line
designed to be subtle. Released by VT Cosmetics in collaboration with BTS,
Frédéric Burtin (Institut Très Bien) is the nose behind the scents. Eau de
Coton is endorsed by the eldest member, (silver voice, Worldwide Handsome
Kim Seok-Jin.
Eau de Coton starts off with the sharpest
‘ethanol hit’ out of the three I brought (Eau de Vert, and Eau d’Ocean being
the other two), which is characteristic of perfumes with white musk – a
prominent note in this once the top fruity floral facets fade.
It features a sharp citrus burst in the
opening (bergamot) before fading to dominant rose and jasmine notes
(reminiscent of Guerlain’s Bouquet Numéro 2) sweetened by violet and a
bite of something with a jamminess similar to peonies.
The blackcurrant is slightly herbaceous and
the apple is crunchy and fresh; and plum isn’t quite the fruit itself, but a
waxier take – similar to plum skin, which gives it a fabric-like scent.
By the end of the first hour, you’re already
hitting the base notes, and it’s heavy on the sandalwood. After all, most
fragrances that want to give off a warm, or cashmere-like scent have
sandalwood, and Eau de Coton is no exception. After all, it’s plays very well
with the rules of mainstream successes, taking in everything popular scents
tend to have, such as white musk – the most dominant note of Eau de Coton in
it’s dry down.
Fitting of its name, it wears close to body
throughout (very small sillage); and since it’s so light, this would be perfect
for those that normally don’t wear perfumes and prefer sticking to fragranced
body products instead.
If you like layering, out of the L’Atelier des
Subtils line, Coton and Océan’s rose + cedarwood notes complement
each other amazingly, while citrus would lift the ‘cottony’ fluffy feel off the
fragrance, giving it that freshly showered impression. If you’re not averse to
trying out an oil + alcohol combo, Alkemia’s Pleasure in the
Flowers really highlights the floral aspects to give them more presence
amongst the fruits of Coton too.
Coton works particularly well with lychee
notes, and if you have any at your disposal, the juicy sweetness of lychee
gives it a faux peony facet – very girly and pretty!
To compare Coton to a BTS song, this isn’t quite “Spring Day”; rather, it’s on the cusp of spring instead, “Crystal Snow” – with its translucency and brightness.
